1. A Day in the Life: As a documentary photographer, I feel that this project would suit my style of photography best as it would record and document a day in an individual's life. I would like to combine this idea with another, mentioned in my initial ideas, which explores mental health. This would involve photographing someone suffering from mental health issues going about their day as they usually would - this would work to highlight the struggles that the sufferer is faced with on a day to day basis which would then in turn promote awareness and understanding of mental well-being.
2. From Where I Stand: Inspired by the I Am Here project I found online, this concept focuses on documenting my feet and the environment around them. I feel that this idea would explore my interpretation of the world from my point of view and hopefully convey this to an audience. For this project to work effectively I would be required to travel to different areas of the country to gain a wide variety of environments to photograph myself in - this could be developed further by photographing in locations that are significant to me and that have a personal meaning. I would also like to shoot using film as this is my favourite format and feel I have not utilised it much throughout this year. It also hope to create some interesting effects, such as negative scratches, high grain and double exposures.
3. People at Work: Inspiration for this concept was drawn from my travels to Istanbul as I saw many people working on the street markets and selling various items on the roads which I then proceeded to photograph. As I am interested in social documentary, I enjoy photographing people and their stories - generally jobs that people have represent them and their personality, which I am hoping to capture in a candid way. The most effective subjects would be those who require props for their jobs such as chefs and farmers. I could also explore the idea of using long exposures to capture the movement and energy of the activities that certain jobs involve.
All very good ideas, I think I'm torn between the first and third however I am slightly biased towards film, so I think maybe using the creative effects you mentioned with one of them may work well, possibly using double exposures to show how someone may struggle to cope internally with a seemingly commonplace event?
ReplyDeleteMaybe shooting one image with the subject looking their normal self then another with the subject's emotions very evident - then superimposing the two images together. Yeah I was thinking of shooting both digitally and with film for whichever idea I chose so I could then choose from both.
Deletei think the first idea is the strongest and would like to see the final social documentary images from that series. Would you be photographing the same people, i would love to hear your ideas.
ReplyDeleteI would rather shoot the first one, just considerations such as subjects etc. that may be a problem but am working on it :) If I was doing the day in the life I would probably just shoot an individual, group or team.
DeleteI like all three ideas, however, i feel that i am torn between idea 1 and idea 3. I think the first idea would be great and would suit your style well. You could use film for this one too?
ReplyDeleteYeah I was thinking of shooting both digitally and with film for whichever idea I chose so I could then choose from both. I like idea 3 too, was thinking of maybe shooting a range of people whilst working then contrasting them, for example a laborious/low income job and a high income job.
DeleteI think you should go for the first idea. A very interesting subject, and I like that you would like to promote awareness and understanding of mental well-being. This would work well in both colour and black and white and I don't think you necessarily need to see the peoples faces. This will maybe give you some flexibility as I know that time and trust is a big issue within social documentary. Good Luck.
ReplyDeleteI think idea 1 and 3 would work best in an exhibition space. The first idea would be really effective and I would be really interested to see the final outcomes. Would you have enough time to shoot this and find a willing subject? Idea three could work well too, especially if you shot it with a narrative.
ReplyDeleteI would like to you perusing the first idea but the time is not on your side so from logical point of view I would go with idea no3. People at work idea give let you doesn't limit you in no way. You can chose any style you want and it quicker to do it. Most of us has job so if ask nicely:) some of could get you insides of our work places.
ReplyDeletegood luck
